A little about me…

A little about me…

Most of professional career has been in the legal arena in one capacity or another.  My first job out of College back in the early 90’s was as a Litigation Paralegal.  I really enjoyed working as a Litigation Paralegal. I found the courtroom to be very exciting.  However, my true passion always was accounting.  During College, I worked at my grandmother’s real estate firm where I did bookkeeping the old fashioned way – in a ledger with a pencil!  I always knew someday, that is where I would end up.

From the early 90’s all the way up until 2011, I worked in Law Firms. I have worn many hats: Paralegal, Legal Secretary, Bookkeeper and Office Manager.  Having worked in the various roles throughout the year gave me the ability to understand every single facet of the inner workings of law firms.  I have also worked in many different types of law: personal injury, intellectual property (including patent prosecution and patent/trademark filings), construction law, insurance defense, family law, and bankruptcy law.

In 2008 I made a life changing decision and moved to Europe where I lived for a year.  It was definitely an experience, and not one I would trade for anything in the world.  When I returned back to the USA I decided it was time to follow my true passion: legal bookkeeping/accounting.  In 2011, I took the plunge and started my own Bookkeeping firm.  Since that time, Total Sum has grown from being just me and my laptop in my home office to a fully staffed office with multiple bookkeepers and clientele.

It’s all about the Balance.  And by that, I don’t mean the “Balance of life” – but the “Balance of the Books”!  If the books don’t balance, I don’t sleep.  In order to provide accurate bookkeeping to law firms you need to understand how a law firm functions and the intricacies and importance of trust accounting. That is where we come in!  There is no challenge to big or to small for us to handle. We love being challenged.  Trust account a mess?  No problem, we live for that!
